What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis — This is the initial stage of gum disease and the easiest to treat. The direct cause of gingivitis is plaque - the soft, sticky, colorless film of bacteria that forms constantly on the teeth and gums.

If plaque is not removed by brushing and flossing on a daily basis, it can reek have and irritate the surrounding gum tissue and cause gingivitis. At this early stage in gum disease, damage can be reversed, since the inflammation has not progressed towards the connective and bony tissues in the mouth. When ignored and untreated, gingivitis can become periodontitis and cause permanent damage to your teeth and jaw.

"If plaque is not removed by brushing and flossing on daily basis, it can reek havoc and irritate the surrounding gum tissue."

Classic signs of gingivitis include red, swollen, tender gums that may even bleed when you brush. Others signs of gum disease is when your gums recede from your teeth, which give your teeth an elongated appearance. These diseases can cause space to form between the teeth and gums, where plaque, food, bacteria, and other objects may linger. Common symptoms include a bad taste in the mouth, bad breath, among other symptoms.
